Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers for families considering end-of-life doula support.

What is an end-of-life doula?

An end-of-life doula is a trained non-medical support person who provides emotional, practical, spiritual, and companion care for individuals and families during serious illness, hospice care, active dying, and end-of-life transitions.

Is an end-of-life doula the same as hospice?

No. Hospice provides medical and clinical care. An end-of-life doula provides non-medical support that complements hospice care. This may include bedside companionship, emotional support, family guidance, legacy work, and vigil support.

Do you provide medical care?

No. One Last Gift Doula Services does not provide medical treatment, diagnosis, medication management, or clinical care. We work alongside medical and hospice teams by focusing on comfort, presence, emotional support, and dignity.

When should a family contact an end-of-life doula?

Families can reach out at any stage. Some contact us when planning ahead. Others reach out during hospice care, serious illness, active dying, or after a loved one has died.

Can you help with advance directives?

We can support conversations around advance care wishes, values, preferences, and end-of-life planning. We do not provide legal advice, but we can help families think through important questions and prepare for meaningful conversations.

What is vigil support?

Vigil support is calm bedside presence during the active dying phase. We help families understand what they may see, create a peaceful environment, and provide reassurance during the final days or hours.

Do you support families after death?

Yes. We offer gentle grief and bereavement support during the early period after a loved one’s death.

Do you work with hospice teams?

Yes. Our services are designed to complement hospice care by providing additional non-medical support for patients and families.

Where do you provide services?

One Last Gift Doula Services supports families throughout Tennessee and surrounding states. Please call to discuss availability in your area.
